TOTL  Kites Made in China

Sometime in the early 1990's, prior to closing his San Diego kite factory and later designing single-line and dual-line stunters to be manufactured in Asia, Don Tabor ventured into the idea of having one of his most popular kite designs manufactured in China.  The Hawaiian Team Chevron Flag. The first TOTL Flight School semester was held on the weekend of Jan. 23/24, 1993.

I don't remember why this particular kite entered the conversation, but on a call with my best bud Mike Dennis, he told me about the China made Hawaiian Team kite and upon me asking the first question about it he abruptly ended the topic. Fast forward a few years later on another call, Mike opened up about what he recently obtained from Don Tabor. In November of 2016 on "moving day", Pam & Mike helped Don clean out his house and garage as Don was leaving for Nevada the next day. Boxes of memories were pre-sorted by Don and Mike was shown which ones were to go to the curb, which was most of it. Don also told Pam & Mike they could take whatever they wish to have. In the boxes were mostly kiting keepsakes and on the ride home they could not let themselves leave those memories they were part of, go to the landfill. At least not yet. Pam & Mike drove back and saved many of those memories. On the call following this event, Mike told me that in one of the boxes from Don he found a "bag full" of China made Hawaiian sails. He said Don had these made to be used when they taught people how to fly dual-line. I didn't know it then but what Mike was referring to was the Top Of The Line Flight School. I asked Mike how many sails there were and he said more than 10. I asked if he would sell me one and he refused. I also didn't realize at the time that these were out there and people owned them, I just wanted one for historical reasons.  After asking Mike what he was going to do with them he replied "I'm going to destroy them". He in fact did destroy them. All but one.

This one.....

I believe this kite was framed when I found it in Pam & Mike's kite bags. It is in remarkable condition and appears unflown. I am happy that Mike saved it. I don't know how many of these were ever made but what is remarkable is that this is the only "Big Wing" TOTL sail ever made by TOTL outside of the USA.

Since 1) This kite exists out in the kite world. 2) It is a different version of the Hawaiian Team Chevron Flag. 3) More importantly, a part of the history of TOTL, I will now refer to this kite as simply "The Flight School Kite" and it will now join a group of other kites in the Soarin Collection I refer to as the "Museum" kites.

Differences between the China Hawaiian Flag and the original USA made Team Flag.....

  • LABEL: China sail does NOT feature a TOTL spine tag.

  • STARS: China sail stars are "printed" on the front of the sail only. They are also slightly smaller and angled.

  • TUBE SLEEVES: China sail is sewn without sleeves for the spine tube and the batten tubes. All of these tubes are exposed.

  • SIZE: As seen in the pics above, the China sail does not fit the standard frame.

  • NOSE: China sail has a completely different nose.

  • SAIL REINFORCEMENT: The China sails reinforcement at the trailing edge of the center red chevron is smaller in size.

If anyone has information they would like to submit about these kites, especially if it conflicts with what is stated here or if you took the TOTL Flight School course, please email me so kiting history can be recorded as accurately as possible. Thanks, Ken.

   Retail Kites

In 1999, after Don Tabor closed his San Diego factory, he sold kites under the Top of the Line name that were manufactured in China. Unlike all of his USA made kites, all of the kite models made in China were sold as "complete" or "ready to fly" packages.

Here are some factory "toy samples".....

I don't actually collect the made in China TOTL kites. The Flight School Kite, the Foil (pictured above) and the two Snap "toy samples" were obtained after Mike's passing. The 3 factory sealed kites  below and the Micro Finger Kite were gifted to me from Pam & Mike.

* The products referred to on this page are NOT "officially licensed" products. They are "genuine" TOTL products.

* If you are a collector of "genuine" Top Of The Line products, don't be fooled by imposters! ALL genuine TOTL products are labeled with the company name and the registered trademark. Also, ALL genuine USA made TOTL products include a (spine) tag with the address of the factory where it was made. "Tag-less" USA sails are extremely rare and most are prototypes.
