TOTL  Sport Kites  Reference

TOTL Retail Kite Models                                                                                                                                                                       

 Although many kites were produced in custom colors and also custom panel patterns, this list covers the 31 models (including variations) manufactured for retail between 1985 and 1997  in San Diego, CA. 

*Notes: ​

  • Some custom color sails ordered by dealers were subsequently mass produced for retail. Additionally, custom sail panel patterns were also subsequently mass produced for retail. Examples include the Hawaiian Team Chevron Flag and the Spin-Off Sunset.

  • The Maui Deluxe Chevron, Hawaiian Team Deluxe Chevron, North Shore Radical Double Stripe and Spin-Off Deluxe are examples of sail patterns that were not given a different model prefix. These models were given higher color numbers starting with #20. These sails are also examples of Top Of The Lines continuous efforts to improve quality and performance. By adding more panels to the sail, especially along the trailing edge, this greatly improved sail strength and performance. The Spin-Off Sunrise is another example of an "improved" sail pattern.

Don Tabor's nicknames for some kite parts...

  • Wiskers (Stand-offs) - Flexible fiberglass rods designed to increase the wind range of the kite and allow easy launching and also keep the sail pushed out to its fullest point when the wind calms.

  • Belly Button - The cut-out in the sail for access to the "T" where the spine meets the spreaders.

  • Pig Tails - Made from black Dacron line, the attachment points for the flying line. Designed for reducing weight and easier/faster assembly. These replaced McMahon clips with swivels on most models.

Action/Hawaiian Label

  • ​Earliest Known - This label was hand written by Don Tabor. It includes the the company name, address, phone #, a serial # and Don's signature. This label is more of a mystery than its rarity because it appears on an Action kite! The 100" x 55" Action kite (later called the Phoenix 20) was Don's first "Big Wing" design. The Action kite was the precursor to the Hawaiian Team kite. Don started a new company called Top Of The Line SportKites during the development of the Hawaiian Team kite. I believe Don labeled this as a TOTL product after he started TOTL because this kite was primarily a prototype to the Hawaiian Team kite.

  • ​Stamp  - This tag is extremely rare. I believe this tag was created during the development of the Hawaiian Team kite prior to its release. It is an ink stamp on fabric and had made. It could have been a temporary tag used while waiting for the initial 1st Generation tags to be made.
